Our time is almost up in Kanchanburi !!

Saturday - 3 April 08

Sawasdee Ka ( Hello)

This is our last full day in Kanchanburi and its going to be hard to leave and move on. We have met some really nice people both local and from overseas. Today was another R & R day. We had our usual breakfast of bacon and eggs and 'Nescafe' coffee and unlike yesterday the service was a bit slow, the cafe was full of tourist and it seemed they couldn't keep up with the pace.

We caught a songcheaw up to the bridge and Rick and I walked the Bridge over the River Kwai and back and then went shopping through the markets for the last time. I finally managed to find and buy some short, loose fat shorts with plenty of room to move and breath. I bought 3 pair and a nice pair of long (purple of course) hippy pants made of light material and they all cost me around $7 Aud each.

The internet cafe we normally go to everyday was packed (its saturday) with backpackers and locals so we couldn't do our usual 'hang out at the internet cafe' thing so we went back to our place and watched the AFL footy all arvo, had a bit of a nanny and poppy snooze and just veged.

It has been raining now for 2 days and we gave our washing to reception to pick up tonight but due to the rain it still isn't dry, thank god I bought more shorts otherwise I would have been up shit creek with no shorts to wear. Tonight we went for a walk along the main drag and had dinner at our normal cafe. We met some english people (older couple and son) and had an interesting conversation with them. They were down from Chiang Mai having a little holiday and the son (about our age) lives permanently in Chiang Mai and he was telling us that there are ship loads of Aussie and Kiwis that permanently live there because its so cheap and a lot of older folk over 50yrs live there and live like kings on their aussie pensions. How cool! Can't wait to get there in a couple of weeks and check it out.

Its been great being here and because its not tourist season according to the locals its pretty quiet. We have met some interesting people and its so different to Phuket. The local shopkeepers and stall holders leave you alone and let you browse where as in Phuket they are always in your face trying to sell you something. The place is steeped in so much history and the locals are very proud of it. Thais really are beautiful people.

Until tomorrow !!! La Kon (Goodbye)
